William "Bill" Patrick Burgess' Obituary
William “Bill” Patrick Burgess of Fredericksburg, VA went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday September 5, 2020.
He was born on October 3, 1934 to the late Clifton Patrick Burgess and Bernice Dunning Burgess in Northampton County, N.C. He was raised on a farm with two sisters and four brothers.
In 1955 he was drafted into the US Army where he was assigned to the 3rd Armored Calvary Regiment in Germany for Czechoslovakian border patrol. William was very proud of his service to his country. After the Army he attended and graduated from Louisiana Tech University with a BS degree in Electronic Engineering. He enjoyed a long career with the Naval Weapons Laboratory (currently Naval Surface Warfare Center) in Dahlgren, VA where he remained until he retired in 1999.
William was a faithful member of Falmouth Baptist Church where he worshiped and served the Lord. His faith helped him to persevere through many tough situations in life and he enjoyed being able to help others out. He did his best to serve or aid those who needed help or just needed someone to visit.
Family was very important to him, and he did his best to love and be there for them even when they were a long distance away. He was a loving and devoted husband, an amazing father of two girls, a wonderful and funny Papaw, and a gentle Papaw Great. He was a humble man who was very hard working and was always busy doing something.
William is survived by his daughters, Lesa Burgess Carver (Kavin), and Angela Burgess Madison (Steve); his grandchildren, Davin Wayne Carver (Cammie), and Kali Rena Carver (Samuel); his great granddaughter, Avery Niccole Carver; his brothers, Leon Burgess, and Troy Burgess (Rita); and his sister, Lynn Burgess Lee (David). He also leaves behind four step children, Janet Tobin (Byron), Tom Gray (Susan), Sue Woodruff (Michael), and Joe Gray; step grandchildren, Jessica, Michael, Meghan, Morgan, and Mitchell; and several step great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Zonette Burgess; his brothers, Earl Preston Burgess, and James Wilson Burgess; and sister, Mary Louise Doebler.
A service celebrating his life will be from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. Thursday September 10, 2020 at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 10719 Courthouse Road in Fredericksburg, with a small graveside service to follow at 12:00 p.m. in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
