For the past couple of years, I have written to Wayne's last 2 e-mail addresses & tried giving him a periodic call on his home line. Only today did I do an online search of his name to find this website offering condolences.
Wayne & I developed a friendship later in his life, starting in 2009. We met for business, but remained friends after my employment ended. Wayne & I kept in touch at least every quarter by telephone, e-mail. & occasional/semi-annual visits.
He quickly became one of 2 people who I knew I could count on & place my complete confidence and trust in, especially when it came to one of my life's biggest trials in 2011.
Wayne's character was without a doubt formed strictly from a deep desire & personal love for Jesus Christ. This gift of charity was convictedly strong & deep in his soul. Wayne's love & desire that others know Jesus (family included) was spiritually intense.
If I remember correctly, Wayne was a bit heart-broken when Fr. Leo moved from his parish years ago. Wayne had a great appreciation for Father's gift of self in personal spiritual direction.
Finally, Wayne was never short in stating his personal feelings with me. Whenever I got off the phone or left his house after a visit, he'd say warmly (& when in person, with a very tight bear-hug), "Matty, I love you & Jeb loves you". These words feel most alive today, they are the ones I'll cherish the most!
