Robert Stewart Buckman Sr.'s Obituary
Cmdr. Robert Stewart (Bob) Buckman, Sr., 92, passed away on Thursday, February 16, 2023, in Fredericksburg, VA.
Bob was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Bob was born January 1, 1931, in Middletown, Connecticut to Roy Curtis Buckman and Pearl Stewart Buckman. He attended Middletown High School before his appointment to the United States Naval Academy. He graduated on 6/6/1952 to begin his military career. He married Dorothy Agnes (Dot) Williams 6/7/1952 to begin their life together and family. Bob served in multiple places, to include his time aboard the USS Pratt and his stations in Japan, Germany, Georgia, Virginia, New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. Bob attended the Naval War College and received commendations throughout his career. He retired from the U.S. Navy in 1975. He began his civil career at Ford Aerospace and Lotus as a logistics engineer until retirement in 1993.
Bob was an avid volunteer in both civic organizations and in multiple Catholic parishes. He particularly enjoyed being a Little League coach, his time serving in the Knights of Columbus, Kiwanis Club, Ancient Order of Hibernians, and the many positions throughout his church life to include Christ the Redeemer in Sterling, St. Mary’s in Stafford , and St. Jude’s in Fredericksburg.
Bob enjoyed many activities during his life. He loved to watch his kids and grandchildren during their multiple sports and creative activities. He treasured his animals, especially his cat, Little Girl. He liked watching football, playing golf, bowling, bridge, and traveling, especially to Ireland.
Bob and Dot were the parents to ten children. He was preceded in death by wife, Dorothy (d. 2013); and children, Michael William (d. 1988), Steven Alan (d. 2018), Brian Scott (d. 2017), and Diane Buckman Welch (d. 2018).
His surviving children include, Dr. Paul Stewart Buckman (Holly) of South Boston, VA, Ms. Lora Buckman (Brian) of Ashburn, VA, Ms. Cathleen Buckman, of Odenton, Maryland, Ms. Cindy Buckman of Palm Coast, Florida, Robert S. Buckman, Jr. (Mary) of Ashburn, VA, Sheila Buckman Reilly (Mark), of Chesapeake, VA, and John Buckman (Kerry) of Berryville, VA; and grandchildren, Joshua Buckman (Kelsey), Rebecca Buckman Kiskinis (Tye), Tamara Buckman, Katie Buckman Boone (Matt), Michelle Welch Reynolds (Jason), Adam Welch (Shena), Stephanie Welch, Ryan Robinson (Rebecca), Noland Robinson (Jenna), Justin Robinson, Kirsten Robinson, Robert S. Buckman III, (Laiken), Kimberley Buckman, Daniel Reilly (Jaime), Joseph Reilly (Katelyn), Matthew Reilly, Jacob Buckman and Jeremy Buckman. In addition, Bob had 25 great grandchildren as well.
Bob’s family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 28, 2023 at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 10719 Courthouse Road, Fredericksburg. A Celebration of Life Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 1, 2023 at St. Jude Catholic Church, 9600 Caritas Street, Fredericksburg. Following the service, Bob will be interred with his beloved wife, Dot, in Quantico National Cemetery with military honors.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in honor of Bob’s life to St. Jude’s Catholic Church or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
