Richard Carroll Woody's Obituary
Richard Carroll Woody, 74, of Culpeper died peacefully on Tuesday, November 27,2012 at his residence. He was born August 5, 1938 in Marion, North Carolina to the late Preacher Burnett Jennings Woody and Lennie Ethel Duncan Woody.
Mr. Woody was a member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church. He also was a member of the Culpeper Food Closet, the Retired Police, Fire and Sheriff's Association of Alexandria and a retired member of the Fraternal Order of Police. Mr. Woody was a past member of Culpeper Country Club, Culpeper County Rescue Squad, Culpeper Parks and Recreation Association, past Vice-President of the Culpeper Little League Association and previously served as Commissioner for the Police and Fire Departments in Mayodan, North Carolina. Mr. Woody held Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Police Science and was an adjunct professor for his university. He had an extensive career in Law Enforcement. He moved to Northern Virginia after graduating high school. Immediately, he was hired, and served three years with the FBI under the J. Edgar Hoover Administration. Upon turning twenty-one years of age, he was hired by the City of Alexandria Police Department. Mr. Woody was shot and subsequently retired, during his career with the City of Alexandria Police Department. He returned to North Carolina after marrying June Ann Roth in June of 1963. After returning to Virginia in the early 1970's, Mr. Woody worked for many years with the Culpeper County Sheriff's Office. In 1995, he retired from Culpeper County Sheriff's Office after having been a court bailiff and most recently, Chief Deputy. Prior to working with the CCSO, he was a Magistrate with the 16th Judicial District.
He is survived by his wife, June Ann Roth Woody of Culpeper; two children Richard Carroll Woody II and his wife Cindy Cook Woody of Chesterfield, VA, and Patricia June Woody Myers and her husband David Byron Myers of Culpeper, VA. Mr. Woody is also survived by his grandchildren Alexandra Michelle Woody, Richard Carroll Woody III, Dennis Burnett Woody and Donald Louis Woody of Chesterfield, VA and Alisa June Myers and Grey David Myers of Culpeper, VA; as well as, three siblings, Dean Woody, Delane Woody, and Joyce Woody Greene.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by seven siblings, Virginia, Wray, Harold, Leo, Ruth, Paul and James.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, December 9, 2012 at 4pm at Culpeper Methodist Church 1233 Oaklawn Drive, Culpeper, VA with the Reverend Michael Gray, officiating. The City of Alexandria Police Department and the Culpeper County Sheriff's Office Honor Guards will be honoring Mr. Woody for his service. A "Celebration of Life" reception will be held immediately following the memorial service.
