Dr. Richard L. Stein's Obituary
Dr. Richard L. Stein died Sunday, December 10, 2023 at his home. He was born July 7, 1944 in Washington, D.C. to Edward John and Margaret Hickey Stein.
Dr. Stein received a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from The George Washington University and a Doctor of Philosophy in Medicinal Chemistry from The Medical College of Virginia. He taught college chemistry for over thirty years, achieving the rank of Professor of Chemistry. During his academic career Professor Stein received several grants and awards for excellence and innovation in chemical education. He published numerous papers and was a staff or contributing writer for several journals and magazines. Upon his retirement he was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus of Chemistry. Dr. Stein was a member of the American Chemical Society, an elected Fellow of the American Institute of Chemists and member of the honorary scientific research Society of the Sigma Xi.
After retirement Dr. Stein continued his studies in the field of Nihonto, establishing an international reputation as an authority in the field. He developed and operated one of the world's leading Internet resources for the understanding and study of Nihonto. It was said that Professor Stein epitomized the ancient scholarly adage: "Gladly would he learn and gladly teach".
He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Dr. Teresa T. Stein; one brother-in-law, J. Patrick Taylor (Connie); one niece, Britt Stanford (Preston); one great niece, Quinn Taylor Stanford; and his beloved tuxedo cat, Ridge.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Margaret Stein.
A brief graveside remembrance will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 15, 2023 at Fairview Cemetery.
