Richard John Schmirl's Obituary
The world suffered a tremendous loss Sunday June 14, 2015 when Richard John Schmirl "Rick" passed away at the age of 61.
He went suddenly while kayaking on the Rappahannock River. At 61 he was more active than most twenty-somethings. He played tennis at Mary Washington Tennis Center and Loriella Park, he biked, kayaked, rode motorcycles, horses, and loved his family.
He served in the US Army retiring after more than 20 years of service over two enlistments. In the military he was recognized with medals for his outstanding service to our country and in retirement recognized by the Toys for Tots foundation for his dedication to brightening the holidays for local children.
Rick is survived by his daughter, Sarah Ntouskas and her husband, Nik of Mechanicsville; two granddaughters, Lily and Mira; two brothers in New York; a sister-in-law in Michigan along with several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his spouse Cindy Schmirl; and his parents, Leonard "Len" and Lois (Volkmar) Schmirl of Fairport, NY.
Rick’s family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Monday, June 22 at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 10719 Courthouse Road, Fredericksburg. A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 23 at the Quantico National Cemetery in Triangle, Virginia.
