Philip Paul Hayden's Obituary
Philip Paul Hayden, 82, of Spotsylvania, Virginia, passed away peacefully at his home on April 14, 2026.
Phil was born on November 24, 1943, in Hempstead, New York, to Reverend Robert and Ruth Hayden. He was the third of five children and grew up with a strong sense of faith and family that stayed with him throughout his life. He graduated from Wheaton Academy where he enjoyed playing football.
Phil courageously served his country as a Captain in the United States Army and was a member of the 173rd Airborne Brigade during the Vietnam War. In 1967, after sustaining 13 bullet wounds while protecting his men, he was medically discharged. For his extraordinary heroism, and leadership, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.
After returning home, Phil received both his bachelors and masters degree from Adelphi University. He went on to work as a Special Agent with the FBI, where he worked in numerous specialty roles, including rappel master, Pathfinder and in sniper operations during his time on the S.W.A.T. team and S.O.A.R.S. unit. He also earned his pilot’s license and conducted aerial flight surveillance missions over New York City. In 1983, Phil moved to Fredericksburg, Virginia, where he became an instructor at the FBI Academy in Quantico, until his retirement in 1999.
Never one to stop learning, Phil later earned his Doctorate in Education and went on to establish two successful businesses in retirement.
Yet despite his many remarkable accomplishments, what mattered most to Phil was his family. He was a devoted and loving father who shared his adventures, wisdom, encouragement, and time generously with his daughters. He was always someone they could count on—for guidance, support, and a good story.
Phil also had a deep love for travel and the outdoors. He explored much of the world, but some of his favorite experiences included multiple hikes in the Grand Canyon and hunting in Africa—adventures that reflected his bold spirit.
Phil was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Ruth Hayden; his sister, Shila Hayden; and his loving wife, Janet Hayden.
He is survived by his daughters: Kimberly (Jay) Ostrander, Jennifer (Dave) Breder, Kristen (Walter) Mora, and Allison (David) Willard, stepdaughters Christi (Mike) Hursta and Erin (Tom) Finley; twelve grandchildren; one great-grandson; brothers Dan (Karilee) Hayden, Hayden (Lani) Hayden, sister Beth (Keith) Pisani; his devoted caregiver, Heather Biller; and his beloved dogs, Petey and Baxter.
Phil was truly larger than life. He never met a stranger and left a lasting impression on everyone he encountered. His stories, strength, humor, and generous spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
The family will receive friends from 5:00-6:00 p.m. Friday, April 24, 2026 at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 10719 Courthouse Road, Fredericksburg, where a funeral service will begin at 6:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. A reception will follow from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
