Otis Lee Gatling Jr.'s Obituary
With deep and heartfelt sorrow, we announce the passing of Otis Lee Gatling Jr., who departed this life on Wednesday, July 2, 2025 in Woodbridge, VA, surrounded by love and family.
Born on July 8, 1954, Otis was the beloved oldest son of Elizabeth Gatling and the late Otis Lee Gatling Sr. From a young age, Otis carried himself with quiet strength, strong values, and a deep commitment to family and a foundation that shaped every part of his life.
Otis was a hardworking and dedicated man who gave 47 years of faithful service to McLane MidAtlantic and Safeway. At Safeway, he was affectionately known as “OG,” a nickname that reflected both his wisdom and the respect he earned from his work family. Known for his consistency, humility, and unwavering work ethic, Otis took pride in showing up and giving his best—day in and day out.
A true sports enthusiast, Otis loved watching football and basketball, and found peace in the quiet moments spent fishing. He also enjoyed photography from time to time, capturing the world as he saw it. No matter how tough life got, Otis remained steady. Whether as a family member, friend, or coworker, you could always count on him.
Otis was a devoted father, son, brother, grandfather, uncle, and friend. He was preceded in death by his father, Otis Lee Gatling Sr.; his beloved wife, Mary (Frye) Gatling; his son, Darawin Gatling; his brother, Dan Gatling; and his sister, Debbie Foxx.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving daughter, LaKenna Gregory; grandson, Nicholas Leo Gatling; his devoted mother, Elizabeth Gatling; sisters, Mary Donavan (Michael), Jerusha Gatling, Diane Jackson (Ralph), and Lisa Fortune (Troy); brothers, Randolph Gatling, Roosevelt Gatling, Timothy Gatling (Gail), and Jeffrey Gatling; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, friends, and colleagues who were blessed to know and love him.
Otis will be remembered always for his calm presence, generous spirit, and the deep, unwavering love he gave so freely. His legacy of resilience, humility, and quiet strength lives on in the hearts of all who knew him.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 15, 2025 at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 10719 Courthouse Road, Fredericksburg. The family will receive friends one hour prior. Burial will follow at 1:00 p.m. at Glen Haven Memory Gardens.
