Nona Davis Hicks' Obituary
Nona Davis Hicks, 69, of Fredericksburg, died Friday Feb 8, 2019 at Mary Washington Hospital, losing her courageous battle against cancer.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 47 years, Garland E. “Biff” Hicks; her son, John and his wife, Beverly of Bristow, VA, all of whom were beside her at the end. She is also survived by her father, Raymond M. Davis of Richmond; two brothers, Steve Davis (Susan) of Richmond and Clinton Davis (Jonna) of Chattanooga, TN. She also leaves behind the true sparkles in her eyes, her beloved twin grandsons, also of Bristow.
Nona grew up in Richmond and attended Longwood College where she was active in a number of endeavors. She received a number of accolades and awards while there, but her true love in college were the sisters of her cherished Phi Mu Fraternity. The bonds she formed with her sisters grew to be lifelong friendships and she maintained close contact with many of them.
Nona and Biff dated on and off through high school and into college, where Biff finally proposed. They were married on September 11, 1971. Nona shortly began an illustrious 37 year career with IBM, winning many awards and vacation trips and finally choosing to retire in 2014. Biff retired from his sales career in 2016 and the two were looking forward to travelling and spending time with their grandchildren.
The two are strong and active supporters of the University of Mary Washington’s Mothers Rugby team, where Nona was often called “Mom Hicks” by the players she befriended, nursed and fed. She was especially proud of the team’s winning the 2017 National Championship. As her health waned in recent years, her enthusiasm and love for “her boys” never faltered.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 19, 2019 at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 10719 Courthouse Rd, Fredericksburg, VA 22407. The service is informal and casual and even beachwear will be welcomed, as the beach was Nona’s favorite place to be. We encourage anyone who wishes to share remembrances and stories from Nona’s life, come prepared to do so.
A Celebration of Life will follow the memorial service at Amy’s Café, under the Falmouth Bridge at 103 W Cambridge St. All are invited to join us in celebrating Nona’s beautiful and fulfilling life in the way she specified, one hell of a sendoff.
