Martha Ann Scott Ross' Obituary
Martha Ann Scott Ross, 64, longtime area resident, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 18th surrounded by family in her home following a courageous longtime battle against cancer. Martha was a graduate of James Monroe High School, James Madison University, University of Virginia, and Longwood University. Martha was often the class president, club president, and graduating at the top of her class, even into her graduate degrees.
A longtime area educator and librarian, Martha was passionate about reading, swimming, sports, gardening, and spoiling her grandchildren as their “Scotty”. She lived life to the fullest and selflessly pitched in to always help those around her no matter the circumstances. Martha coined the phrase, “The love just grows and grows”, which encompassed her view on life. Acting on this phrase, her love spread not only to her family, but to friends, colleagues, and community as a listening ear, supporter, and advocate. She began the support group, “Between Friends”, for women in the community who have experienced cancer which will continue on following her passing.
Martha also had a knack for storytelling and wordsmithing - especially when describing her growing up as the ‘baker’s daughter’ of the owner of the former downtown gathering place, Scotty’s Pastry & Coffee Shop, on William Street.
Martha joins her late father, John Eugene Scott, and mother, Gloria Chilcott Scott, in heaven. She is survived by husband Richard, daughters Sarah Knoll (Tommy) and Amy Ross, and grandchildren Marshall (4 years) & Henry Knoll (1 month), and brothers Jeffrey Scott (Jill) and Hunter Scott (Peggy).
Celebration of life to be held at Stevenson Ridge on September 4th, 2022 from 2-5pm. Please RSVP to 540-582-5990 by August 15th. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to breast cancer research.
