Lou Ellen Miller's Obituary
A vibrant, beloved friend to many, Lou Ellen Thurston Miller left this world on July 5, 2026, with her husband and son by her side, following a quiet and courageous journey with cancer.
Born March 30, 1955, to Doris Herndon and David Vernon Thurston, she grew up in Culpeper and founded The Body Works, a trailblazing local fitness studio. She brought group fitness to the area, including specialized classes for adults, seniors, and kids, as well as prenatal classes and on-site classes for local businesses.
Her legacy was not in the business she built, but in the lives she touched, known for her infectious energy and constant drive to uplift others. She created a place where friendships were formed, confidence was built, and music and movement reminded people of their own resilience. As a master instructor, she assembled a team including her mother and people who became some of her closest friends, whose dedication and hard work made it possible. Together they brought out the best in everyone and created true belonging.
Her commitment to her community went beyond, as a Board Member of the American Heart Association, St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, the Country Club of Culpeper, Relay for Life, the Culpeper Memorial Hospital Foundation, and as a supporter of the Culpeper Food Closet. She also met many friends working for Clinique, where she was consistently the highest ranked, even as the only part-time associate. And for the last six years of her career, she was proud to be associated with Powell Wellness, and PATH.
She leaves behind the absolute love of her life, Michael Brooke Miller of Culpeper, married 46 years, and her son Fielding Thurston Miller of Aspen, CO.
Of all her accomplishments, being a mom was her most cherished and loved. "There was or will never be a more proud Mom," she said. They were fortunate to share many travels and new experiences, Fielding always encouraging his mom to push the envelope and try new adventures.
A gathering to celebrate her life will be held at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church Fellowship Hall on Sunday, July 12, 2026, from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m.
