Justin DeLeon Glymph's Obituary
Retired United States Marine Corps Sergeant Major Justin D. Glymph, 54, of Fredericksburg, VA, was called home to be with the Lord on August 28, 2015, at his home with his loving wife by his side.
Justin was born July 14, 1961 in Danville, Virginia to the late Raymond L. Glymph and the late Effie E. Glymph. He grew up in Brooklyn, NY where he attended Boys and Girls High School. He later attended Delaware Valley Job Corps; enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in January 1982, and retired with honors in July 2011. He later completed his postsecondary education through Excelsior University, earning his Associate Degree in December 2012 and his Bachelor’s Degree in July 2014.
Justin was a Marine’s Marine who served in every clime and place the Marine Corps had to offer. His military career took him on the adventure of a lifetime. He proudly served at military bases worldwide and received numerous meritorious promotions. Among his many exciting tours and assignments, his honorable tenure included charges as a Watchstander (New Jersey), Infantry Fire Team Member, Scout Sniper, Squad Leader and Security Operations Participant (North Carolina, California, Mediterranean Sea, Japan, Norway, Lebanon), Combat Shotgun and Pistol Marksmanship Instructor and Navy Cadre Trainer (New Hampshire). Justin was also responsible for the development of the first Designated Marksmanship Course at F.A.S.T. Company (Norfolk, VA); he served as the Assistant Operations Chief of Headquarters Company, S-3, Headquarters Battalion, 3d Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force (Japan),as a Drill Instructor for eight cycles in Delta Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion (South Carolina), an Infantry Platoon Sergeant, Company Gunnery Sergeant, Acting First Sergeant, Scout Sniper Platoon Commander/Scout Sniper Platoon Sergeant, Assistant Operations Chief, and Battalion Operations Chief (Cuba), Marine Officer Instructor (Pennsylvania), Infantry 0369 Monitor (MC Headquarters), Company First Sergeant, Ordinance Maintenance Company, 3d Material Readiness Battalion, and Detachment First Sergeant for Exercise Balikatan (Japan). In November 2005, First Sergeant Glymph was promoted to Sergeant Major and in August 2006 he was assigned as a patient to Wounded Warrior Battalion. In January 2008, he became a mentor with the Enlisted Professional Military Education, Marine Corps University. In August 2008 Sergeant Major Glymph was assigned as the Sergeant Major Inspector General office (Virginia).
Justin excelled in every assignment and his stellar career and outstanding performance is reflected in his four meritorious promotions to the ranks of Private First Class, Lance Corporal, Corporal, and Staff Sergeant.
His personal decorations include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with one gold star in lieu of second award, Navy Commendation Medal with three gold stars in lieu of fourth award, Navy Achievement Medal with four gold stars in lieu of fifth award, and the Combat Action Ribbon with one gold star in lieu of second award.
Within this hero lived an amazing family man. “Family” was anyone and everyone Justin came to know and love. He had a passion for seizing life’s great opportunities and an even greater passion for encouraging others to do the same. He lived strong and he loved even stronger. He is described by many as a true leader and mentor, one who’s actions, character and generosity had a lasting and meaningful impact on everyone who knew him.
Justin leaves to cherish in his memory his wife, Chelsea Rice Glymph; his three sons, Dontay Glymph of Riverside, CA, Justin Glymph II of Virginia Beach, VA, and Joshua Glymph of Fredericksburg; two daughters, Juanita Glymph of North Charleston, SC, and Chantelle Gregory (son-in-law Micheal) of Henrico, VA. He also leaves five grandchildren, Jaequan Glymph, Alanna Glymph, Pia Collins, Jordan Glymph, and Ylana Gregory.
He is survived by his stepfather, Frank Moore, of Fredericksburg, two sisters; Luluetta Glymph of Brooklyn, NY and Adrian Foster (Duane) of Washington DC; four brothers, Raynard Glymph (Carmen) of Brooklyn, NY, Quinton Glymph of Brooklyn, NY, Lyman Glymph of Austin, TX, Derrick (Anita) Glymph of Pembroke Pines, FL and one adopted brother, Tereem K. Glymph of Brooklyn, NY; three Aunts, Joanne Glymph McLean of Danville, VA, Barbara Via of Baltimore, MD and Carolyn Tolliver (Clyde) of Auburn, WA; one uncle, Nelson Glymph of Danville, VA. He also leaves his mother-in-law, Barbara L Rice of Fredericksburg; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his sister, Katrina Glymph, and his father-in-law, Oliver J. Rice Sr.
Justin’s family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday, September 4, 2015 at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 10719 Courthouse Road, Fredericksburg. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, September 5, 2015 at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel. Interment will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 29, 2015 in Arlington National Cemetery.
