John Patrick Flaherty's Obituary
John P. Flaherty, 90, of Fredericksburg, VA, died February 15, 2014, at Mary Washington Hospital.
Born August 8, 1923 in East Boston, MA, the son of Patrick and Ellen (McCarthy) Flaherty. He was raised in East Boston. After his service in the Navy, he travelled the United States working at many newspapers as a typesetter. He married his wife Frances and they lived in Washington, DC. They also lived in Hillcrest Heights, MD before retiring in Virginia.
John served as a Navy signalman on board the steamer "John N. Maffitt" in World War II.
John retired from the Washington Post where he was a five term elected official of the International Typographical Union.
John was an avid golfer, enjoyed horse racing and playing cards, and travelled around the world. He loved sports, especially the Boston Red Sox.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his loving wife of 43 years, Frances Flaherty, his sister Agnes (Flaherty) Monahan and brother Lawrence Flaherty.
John is survived by his son Stephen E. Buick and wife Linda, niece Patti (Monahan) Sopiak and husband Joe, nephew Francis Monahan and wife Joan, niece Ann (Flaherty) Servaes and husband John, nephew, Robert Flaherty and wife Nancy, niece kathleen (Flaherty) MacLellan and husband Gerard, and many grandnieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at Found and Sons Funeral Chapels-Cremation Service, 10719 Courthouse Road, Fredericksburg. Interment will be held at noon Thursday, March 6, 2014 in Quantico National Cemetery, 18424 Joplin Road, Triangle, VA
