I have known JoE for many years, and he was a great friend...to me and to all in his orbit! He was a true leader (as others have mentioned) whether when we were playing or when we had a job to do.
I remember when we went to Las Vegas with JoE for Christmas one year. He called us at the airport and told us that he asked for a room upgrade and got it...and slipped the desk clerk a $20. So, we told the desk clerk that we were "with Mr. Smith" and we understood that he had arranged upgrades for the party. We got it too!!! What a scheming dude!
On a more serious note, I'll miss JoE forever...He's the kind of friend that seeks you out when he's in the neighborhood...and we are a far cry from Kileen, but that's exactly what he did. On a trip to Kileen, he came to our house in San Antonio for supper...that's JoE!!!

JoE had been in my life for over 20 years. He was the one in the group who always organized the get-togethers so we wouldn't lose touch. He was my unofficial financial adviser and trusted friend. He loved to pick on me and to try to get my goat. The most recent incident being the attendance at his 110th b-day in celebration of milestone birthdays for he and his sister. He had scheduled it the same day as my daughter's 14th birthday and I wasn't sure I'd be able to make it. He didn't take no for an answer and I recently found a voice mail of him on my phone telling me he needed my address so he could send me an official invitation. He ended his lighthearted message with his typical wheeze that always followed one of his good laughs. I'm never going to delete that message. He was truly a treasure. Thank you JoE for your kindness to me and my son, Nathan (yes he STILL has the case and knife collection you gave him when he was only 6 years old (27 now)). Thank you for entertaining Savannah and AJ with your antics whenever they visited with us. I miss you more than you could ever know. I wish you, his family, much comfort at this great loss.

My wife Cathy and I are shocked and saddened to hear the news of Joe's passing. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was a generous and good friend. We will drink a bourbon toast to his memory.

Joe and I have known each other over 40 years. He was always the quiet one in the group but had a great sense of humor. When I joined the Navy, he and anothet friend took me to dinner at Diamond Head restaurant my last night home. He bought flowers with a card that said "Happiness in your new home! I still have that card. He will be missed dearly by all that knew him well. God Bless all the family. With deepest sympathy, Debbi Saphonchak-Baker.
