Joan "Joni" Powell's Obituary
Joni Powell, 59, of Spotsylvania, peacefully climbed into the loving arms of her Heavenly Father on Monday, May 6, 2024. Joni was a cherished daughter and sister, talented vocalist, loving caregiver, and teacher at heart; we celebrate her life.
Fondly known as "number 5", Joni was the fifth of seven children. She is preceded in death by her parents, Lewis “Wally” and Velva Powell, and her brother, Stephen. She is survived by her siblings, Teresa, David, Timothy (Deborah), Ellen, and Carolyn; her nieces and nephews; her great-nieces and nephews; numerous cousins, neighbors, and lifelong friends, all of whom she held close to her heart.
Hungry for knowledge at every age, Joni was an avid reader and student. From book to book, lesson to lesson, her interests overflowed, and with her natural giftings she shared with others - from “littles” to “grands.”
While attending Stafford Senior High School (Class of 1982), she volunteered for a summer program (JROTC) at Marine Corps Base Quantico repairing roads, clearing land, and building trails and campsites. This sparked her passion for community service and ignited her problem-solving skills. If Joni could not fix the problem, she would find someone who could. With unrelenting fervor, she would not rest until it was resolved.
After graduation, she and her father trained together for EMT certification gaining calm, focused skills, which later proved invaluable during the emergency delivery of her niece.
So much like her mother, Joni’s passion for music began at an early age. She performed publicly in her teens through her affiliation with the Great Commission Company (GCC). Her talents were quickly detected; she humbly embraced her calling by joining church worship teams, which led to professional solo and duet productions. Joni's voice graced several Christian albums, leaving behind a legacy of soul-stirring melodies.
Her adventurous spirit thrived in the great outdoors where she found solace. She saw the beauty of nature in its simplicity. She pondered all of God’s creations, from the universe to our tiny planet, life - great and small. She loved puppies and kittens, tadpoles and “hern-dippin,” lamb chasing, horseback riding, plants and flowers, trees, and mountains, and don’t forget FROGS … she LOVED it ALL!
Joni's spirit was marked by her tender care, meticulous attention to detail, and unwavering selflessness, easily recognized by the devoted care she gave her mother. Her profound love for Jesus illuminated her path, as she lived out a life of service and compassion, touching countless lives along the way.
Joni's zest for life and her infectious laughter could light up a room; she will forever remain etched in the hearts of those who were blessed to know her.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 17, at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, Fredericksburg. A service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 18, at the funeral home chapel. Final events will be private.
To celebrate “the FROG LADY,” please feel free to come dressed in your favorite t-shirt (tie-died, funny sayings, or a cute frog, etc.).
