Jeremiah "Dickie" Peyton Atkins III's Obituary
Jeremiah “Dickie” Peyton Atkins, III, 85, of Culpeper passed away Tuesday, January 24, 2023, at his residence. He was born August 9, 1937, to the late Jeremiah Peyton Atkins, Jr. and Marie Kinsey Atkins in Rappahannock, VA.
Dickie was in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1963. He was a Co-Founder of the Salem Volunteer Fire Department, Company 8 which was established in 1979. He was a Charter and Life Member. Dickie served as Fire Chief for many years and was an active member of the Board of Directors serving as President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer over the years. He was also a Charter Member of the Reva Volunteer Fire Department, Company 16. Dickie was active with the Virginia State Firefighters Association for 12 years where he served as the Secretary for eight years. He served with the Virginia Fire Service Council for five years as a Secretary and Treasurer and with the Rappahannock-Rapidan EMS Council. Dickie also was a Life Member with the American Legion Post 330 in Culpeper.
Dickie is survived by his wife, Jean “Pat” Cornell Atkins; children, James Atkins (Susan), Briant Atkins (Leitha), and Kim Atkins; grandchildren Ashley Artale (Jamie), Eliza Richards (Phillip), and Madelyn Atkins; great-grandchildren Jaxon and Payton Artale; sister Mary Alice “Red” Hoffman (Jack); sister in law, Dottie Atkins; and a host of additional nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
In addition to his parents, Dickie is preceded in death by his great-grandson, Liam Richards; brothers, Donald “Duck” Atkins and John Sherman; sister, Betty Allman; and brother-in-law, Gary Allman.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, January 31, 2023, at 11 a.m. at Salem Volunteer Fire Hall, 13428 Scotts Mill Road, Culpeper, VA 22701 with Elder Gary Utz and Pastor Tom Williams officiating. Salem Volunteer Fire Department, Company 8, and Culpeper County Volunteer Fire Department, Company 1 will render honors. Interment will follow at Culpeper National Cemetery, 502 E. Chandler Street, Culpeper, VA 22701 with Military Honors provided by VFW Post 2524 and American Legion Post 330.
Honorary Pallbearers to serve the family will be Mike Bailey, John Hall, Kevin Winn, Glenn Morris, Scott Lohr, Dempsey Young, and Fulton Lucas.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Dickie’s name to Salem Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 1254, Culpeper, VA 22701.
