Jacob Zachary Tharpe's Obituary
Our beloved Jake Tharpe, 53, passed away peacefully on June 9, 2026, in Madison, Virginia, after a long and courageous battle with illness. Through every challenge he faced, Jake held tightly to the sense of humor, stubborn determination, and love for his family that defined him.
Born in Dallas, Texas, Jake lived life on his own terms. He attended UA Mechanical Trade School, graduating in 2000, and spent nearly 32 years working as a steamfitter mechanic with Local 286 and Local 602. He took great pride in his trade and was known as a hardworking, skilled craftsman who wasn’t afraid to get his hands dirty and always looked out for those around him.
On July 28, 2012, Jake married the love of his life, Keri. Together, they shared a life built on friendship, love, laughter, and unwavering devotion. Though Keri’s passing left a hole in his heart, their bond remained an enduring part of Jake’s life.
Anyone who knew Jake knew there was never a dull moment when he was around. He had a deep love for Harleys, cherished time spent with family and friends, and possessed a gift for making people laugh even in the most difficult of times. Although his humor was often hilariously inappropriate, it was always unforgettable and served as a constant reminder not to take life too seriously. Even during the darkest days of his illness, Jake continued to joke, laugh, and make light of his circumstances.
Jake leaves behind those who loved him most: his mother, Margaret Vroom; his stepfather, Rick Vroom; his brother, Michael Vroom; his sons, Steven and Zachary; and his stepdaughter, Casey. He also leaves behind countless more family, friends, coworkers, and union brothers who will cherish his memory.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Keri Tharpe, and his father, Marvin Tharpe.
Though Jake’s absence leaves an ache in the hearts of those who loved him, there is comfort in knowing that somewhere he is riding his Harley, reunited with Keri, and undoubtedly making everyone around him laugh.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, June 28, 2026, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Founders Hall at Station 6 of the Ashburn Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, 20688 Ashburn Rd., Ashburn, VA 20147.
