Homer was my first boss when I went to work at Ft. Belvoir right out of high school. He was kind and patient, and had a profound effect on my professional future. We were also related; I was lucky enough to learn about my ancestors through his diligent geneology work and am able to pass this information on to my children. I have gotten a Christmas card from him every year for the past 30 years; I will truly miss you, Homer.

A true southern gentleman! Whether at work mentoring those of us who were younger, as a leader on staff visits around the world, or sharing raspberry plants as a friend, Homer was always of the calmest demeanor. He was pleasant, friendly and a joy to know. He has gone to his well deserved reward!

I remember when Janet and Homer always made a seat for me when we went to church together. What a nice gentleman he was and they made the passing of my husband a little easier by their kindness. He will be missed by his lovely wife and family.

I enjoyed working with Homer at the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park, where he volunteered for years. He was great to talk with about Civil War history, especially about Stafford County. He was a brilliant historian and I have used his books as references. He will be sorely missed by me and all that knew him at the Park!

I didn't know Homer as well as I would have liked to but I spoke with him enough to learn that a true leader doesn't have to raise his voice for men to follow. We may have lost the pleasure of speaking with Homer but he will certainly live on through his actions, deeds, and the lives he has touched.
Homer was a great man and excellent historian, the likes of which we don't often see or appreciate, until they are gone. May God take him into his arms and remove the pain from his family, leaving only the pleasant memories of Homer.
I worked for Homer during the late 70's while at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He was a fine and caring boss who had such a calm demeanor. Rest in peace Homer.
