I first met Elke in the 1970’s when she worked at, I believe, Franz Ritchie Shoe Store, at Pan Am Shopping Center. She was always helpful in fitting our son and me with shoes that fit. When she worked at Shoes for Comfort, I got to know her better and learned that Klaus and our daughter Monica attended Oakton H.S. and were in chorus together their freshman year.
In 2007, after I’d finished my exercise at Powell Wellness Center, who should walk in the door but Elke. We both looked at each other and said, “What are you doing here?” From then on we became fast friends. I got Elke to join the Culpeper Women’s Club in which we had many good times especially working on crafts and going to lunch. Max and I have enjoyed and treasured Elke’s friendship over these past 15 years. We are going to miss her but will have those many fond memories of our times together.
She was a strong woman and always determined to get better. We admired that in her and also the way she took care of Klaus all those years. She was a blessing to us all.
Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you.
