Donald Elton Jennings' Obituary
Donald Elton Jennings 80, of Boston, VA passed away at home surrounded by loved ones on November 23, 2017 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Born on May 9, 1937 in Lynchburg, VA, he was the son of the late Leroy Randolph Jennings and Margaret (Maggie) Hudson Jennings.
He is survived by his sweetheart and wife of 46 years, Kathryn Louise Zimmer Jennings and daughters, Karen Jennings (Ted Weber) and Leigha Jennings Gordillo. He is also the survived by the love and joy of his life, his four grandchildren, Marcelo, Helena, Eloise and Charlotte Gordillo. He was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy (Dot) Belle Bibb and his brother Harman L. Jennings. He is survived by his brothers, Warren D. Jennings, Leroy R. Jennings, Jr., and Linwood H. Jennings. He is also survived by nieces and nephews James Bibb, Jr., Debbie Allen, Greg Jennings, Gary Jennings, Larry Jennings, Dawn Edwards, Steve Jennings, Clinton Jennings, Troy Jennings, Neal Jennings, Kimberly Jennings, Ward Zimmer, Andy Zimmer and Jill Cunningham, as well as other extended family.
Donald Jennings graduated from E.C. Glass High School in Lynchburg in 1957. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army for three years and served a tour of duty in Korea. From the Army, he went to work for the U.S. State Department and served in both Paris and Algeria. Later he graduated from Benjamin Franklin University, Washington D.C. (now a part of George Washington University) where he received a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and a Master’s degree in Finance. A lifelong public servant, he worked for several Federal Government agencies and retired from the Department of Health and Human Services with 37 years of Federal Government service in 1995. During his career, he received four Cash Management Awards from the U.S. Department of Treasury including one for his key role in helping the U.S. Treasury Department convert from a paper check payment system to an Electronic Funds Transfer payment system (which is still used today). He and his wife moved from Kensington, MD to Boston, VA in 2007. In his retirement, Donald enjoyed doing genealogy research on his family, spending time in his garden, and tending to his many bluebird houses. He was a member of the Jamestowne Society, the Sons of the American Revolution, the Sons of Confederate Veterans, the Rucker Family Society, and the Hudson Family Association. He was also an active Mason and Shriner, and a Past Master of Kensington-Bethesda Lodge F.A.A.M. and Past Patron of Kensington Chapter O.E.S.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at 12 Pm at Culpeper United Methodist Church, 1233 Oaklawn Drive, Culpeper, VA, with Pastor Randy Orndorff and Rev. Lanny Horton. Family will receive friends two hours prior to the service.
Burial will be held at Newton Cemetery in Emporium, PA.
