In his work life, David Roberts contributed extensively to NRL suborbital (sounding rocket) research programs for solar physics over a period spanning 6 decades. Dave’s broad experience in this sometimes-unorthodox mode of research led him to become essential personnel on NRL campaigns. No one was more reliable in identifying important intangibles during the tense blockhouse moments leading up to launch. It is difficult to imagine the desert rigors of payload recovery (via now-aging Army Hueys) without the confidence Dave provided.
Dave’s kindness and humanity touched everyone involved in sounding rocket research. His influence was greatest on the younger scientists & engineers, who responded to his kindness with renewed effort after the inevitable setbacks of this kind of research. Co-workers from around the world join me in offering condolences.
