I regret that I never had the privilege of meeting the late Mr. Chauncy Thebaud McIntosh in person. I did, however, learn something of the life "Uncle Mac" led from his nephew, Stephen S. Hill of Washington, DC. Steve is my lifelong friend and a former Harvard classmate. Many years ago, he speculated that Uncle Mac was likely to remain a confirmed bachelor. Apparently, all that ended when he met and married The One. To her, and to the children and grandchildren of that blessed union, I extend my heartfelt condolences on his loss.
My own image of "Uncle Mac" will always be the portrait Steve painted in my mind of a strong, hardworking, upstanding family man who was master chef at the family barbecues he hosted. One summer day I ran into Steve at Giant Foods in Silver Spring, Maryland. When I asked why he had loaded his shopping cart with such a huge collection of steaks and other meats, I learned he wasn't trying to stock his freezer. He was en route to a barbecue at Uncle Mac's. I know how much he loved and admired this man who was much more than a beloved uncle. He was also his friend and role model.
So, Steve and Michael, I extend my deepest sympathy. May you and your entire family find solace in happy memories of Uncle Mac. He ran the good race, fought the good fight, and now he wears his starry crown. May light perpetual shine upon you, Uncle Mac. May you rest in eternal peace.
