Woodrow Chewning
Mr. Woodrow (“2-Wire”) Chester Chewning, 69, died December 5, 2007 at Mary Washington Hospital after a courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis. Woody was affectionately known to his friends as “2-Wire,” a reference to his electrical ingenuity.
Woody served in the United States Air Force from 1959 to 1964 and retired in 1999 from the Naval Surface Weapon Center in Dahlgren, after 30 years of service. He was an electrician by profession and enjoyed working on automobiles and tractors, farming, gardening and helping others. He was adept at fixing almost anything mechanical or electrical. He played guitar and sang in the church choir. He attended Fellowship Baptist and Olivet United Methodist churches in Spotsylvania and sang duets with his wife, Jeanne.
Woody is survived by his wife Delores Jeanne Chewning of Spotsylvania and was the “adopted” father to Valerie Lingerfelt of Richmond and grandfather to her son, Ethan. Woody is survived by six children, Melinda and her husband, Tony, Melissa and her husband, Ricky, Karen and her husband, Donnie, Kimberly and her husband, Kevin, Ralph and his wife, Michelle and Kenneth. Woody is also survived by his mother, Katherine Chewning of Spotsylvania; three brothers and four sisters, James Chewning of Spotsylvania, Irvin Chewning of Spotsylvania, Donald Chewning of Altoona, Pennsylvania, Thelma Rice of Mathews, Carrie Nutter of Harrisonburg, Deloris Johnson of Staunton, and Barbara Hawley of Burke; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Woody was a loving and beloved uncle to more than 25 nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his father, Roy Chester Chewning.
