Wilson Baker's Obituary
Wilson (Wilbert) Baker was born September 27, 1943 in Scotland Neck, NC to the late Mary Lucille Baker and the late William Edward Suggs. Our Heavenly Father called him home on Sunday, December 23, 2012 while in hospice care at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, VA
Wilson attended Brawley High School in Scotland Neck, NC. He later went on to work in Virginia Beach, VA. After a short time in VA, he went on to Hempstead, NY where he met and married Gladys Peoples. Together they had three children; two sons and one daughter and nurtured one step-daughter.
Wilson joined Union Baptist Church in Hempstead, NY until he moved to VA. He also attended Brooklyn Technical School where he learned to be a machinist. He went on to work as a machinist for 25 years. He also worked for NYC Transit and Time Warner Cable until moving to Fredericksburg, VA in 2004. While in Fredericksburg he worked for Cowles Nissan of Woodbridge, VA and also became a member of Shiloh Baptist Church (Old Site) in Fredericksburg.
Wilson Baker was a Vietnam Veteran proudly serving his country in the United States Army.
Wilson (aka Wilbert, Chief, Pops, or Poppy) was a “give it to ‘em straight” kind of guy! Known by many as the fun uncle/cousin, his sense of humor and sharp wit was experienced by many and will bring a smile to many for years to come.
Wilson leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 51 years, Gladys Baker; sons, Gordy Lavon Baker (Joyce) of Ft. Meade, MD, Gregory Baker of North Babylon, NY; daughter, Valerie Michelle Gartrell (Gregory) of Stafford, VA; one step-daughter, Velma Jenket (Donald) of Whitakers, NC; three brothers, Curtis Lee Baker (Lois) of Fredericksburg, VA, McKenly Suggs of NJ and Lester Suggs of PA; one sister, Barbara Bothuel of NJ; 13 grandchildren, Darry Silver of NC, Cherie Wright (Jamille) of VA, Greg Wiggs of NC, Ciance Gibson of NC, Devante Wiggs of NC, Toni Gartrell of VA, Joy “Navon” Baker of NJ, Isaac Gartrell of VA, Cameron Baker of NY, Briona Baker of MD, Tavion Baker of MD, Kayla Baker of MD and Xavier Baker of MD; one step-grandson, Jamel Gartrell of MD; one great-granddaughter, LaShay Silver of NC; two step-great grandchildren, Elijah and Brianna Gartrell of MD; brothers-in-laws, Luther Peoples of MD, Walter Peoples of DC, and George Peoples of NC; sisters in law, Angie Showell of DC, Alice Werts of NY, Mozell Kornegay of NJ, Marie Taylor (Carl) of MD and Brenda Ellis (Danny) of NC; one uncle, Horace (Bill) Baker, Sr. of NC and one Aunt, Dora Clark of NC. Wilson also leaves to cherish fond memories a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and lifelong friends. He was loved by all.
