William Russell Brown's Obituary
William Russell Brown 90, of Stevensburg, Culpeper County passed into eternal rest on Saturday July 5, 2008 at his residence of his daughter and son-in-law, Jane Gray B. Hitt and Kenneth W. Hitt (Bubby) following a long period of declining health. Born on December 28, 1917 in Culpeper County, to the William Ernest Brown, Sr. and Clydie Utz Brown.
Russell attended Stevensburg Grammar School and Brandy High School.
On January 20, 1939 he was united in marriage wit the late Rhoda Jane Webb.
Russell was well known retired farmer and employee of Culpeper Farmers’ Cooperative having worked there until retiring at the age of 65. He rejoined the work force at the Co-Op a year later and retired again at the age of 82.
A member of the Stevensburg Baptist Church, he was first and foremost faithfully committed to serving the Lord whenever and in whatever capacity he could including being an ordained deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School Treasurer and chairman of the Cemetery Committee.
In addition to his church involvement Russell was a charter member of the Lignum Ruritan Club loyally serving with perfect attendance for 57 years, many of those years as treasurer of the club. He was also a member of the Farm Bureau, AARP, and enjoyed traveling with Culpeper Tours.
Surviving Russell in addition to his daughter and her husband are his son William Russell Brown, Jr. (Buddy) and his wife Sherry and a sister Virginia G. Brown and her husband Kenneth (“Shorty”), all of Stevensburg.
Additional survivors include nine grandchildren: Kenneth Donald Hitt, Gary Randall Hitt, Penny Paige Hitt Hurt, Lisa Gray, Michelle Pearman, William Anthony Brown, Mary Jane Staton, William Russell Brown III, Llew Brown, twenty four great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren. Also included are special friends: Eleanor L. Rinker, Rev. Philip Walker and his loyal caregiver Johnsy Perkins.
Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents and wife, were two brothers Eugene L. Brown and William Ernest Brown, Jr.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday July 8, 2008 from 6 to 8p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper, Va.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday July 9, 2008 at 11:00a.m. at the Stevensburg Baptist Church with Rev. Philip Walker officiating assisted by Rev. John G. Garrett. Interment will follow in the church cemetery
Serving as pallbearers will be Curtis J. Hurt, Jeremy W. Hitt, Britton R. Hitt, William R. Hitt, William A. Brown and William R. Brown III..
