LTC William F. Stecher,Jr. USA(Ret.)'s Obituary
LTC William F. Stecher Jr. (RET) was born on July 26, 1929 in Canton, OH, where he married Audrey L. McDonald in 1948. In addition to his wife, he loved his children: Tommy, Libby (deceased), Rodney, and their spouses Madonna, Doug Fargo, and Laura; his eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and his super dog.
He was a 1947 graduate of Canton McKinley High School and in 1952, after graduating from Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science, he entered the U.S Army as a field artillery officer.
For over 21 years he had a prestigious military career. He served in command and staff positions throughout the U.S., with two tours in Korea and one in Germany. One of his proudest moments was being hand selected to participate in the U.S. Government’s atmospheric nuclear testing program in the 1950’s. He was a Battalion Commander at Fort Polk, LA, and served on the general staff at the 7th Army Headquarters in Germany and the Pentagon. He retired from Fort Belvoir, VA in 1973. Of his numerous awards, the highest was The Legion of Merit.
He was a member of the Tabernacle United Methodist Church. He loved bowling and was an avid Ohio State Buckeyes fan (GO BUCKS!). He loved his country and he was the greatest family man.
Bill’s family will receive friends on Friday, June 11, 2010 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapels-Cremation Service, 10719 Courthouse Road, Fredericksburg. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 12, at 10 a.m. at Found and Sons.
LTC William F. Stecher Jr. (RET) will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery on September 2, at 9 a.m.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to The American Cancer Society, c/o Trudy Clifton, 113 Tall Pines Avenue, Locust Grove, VA 22508.
