Virginia Elizabeth Sullivan's Obituary
Virginia Elizabeth Fines Cooke Sullivan, 91, born on July 10, 1926 through the union of Leonard Luther Fines and Virginia Ann Newton, daughter of Willy Tobias Newton and Birdie Newton in the Village of Patawomeck at the top of the watershed that runs to both the Rappahannock and Patawomeck, in the area known as White Oak. She is a Patawomeck tribal elder charged with giving unconditional love like the angels and served us well in this purpose. We are the Anuanaki, those who from the sky descended. She descended from the royal bloodline of the Iroquois known as the Algonquian. She descended from a union of Kocoum, A Patawomeck War Captain, and Pocahontas, daughter of Powhatan and Winganooskee. Their son Wahangonoche, last Weroance of Patawomeck, known as Lil Kocoum when born in 1612 at Patawomeck was her 9th great-grandfather.
She ascended to the light to watch the sunrise with those who preceded her; her daughter, Darlene Courtney (Mike), born Oct. 15, 1947, and sisters “AA” (Esther Green) born Oct. 19 1927 and “Punk” (Linda Headley) born Aug. 4, 1933. She also joyfully joins her late husband, Garnett Wiley Sullivan. This occurred just prior to Sunrise on Oct. 14, 2017. She was surrounded by her family and friends at Mary Washington Hospital during her transition. Thank you all, especially her 94 year old dear friend, Laura Sommers and family. Thank you Leonard Dal Holland and your magical wife, Shirley Lane Bullock for keeping our mama at home and Cindy’s Tim keeping her upright to maintain her independence.
Survivors include Darlene’s three sons, Michael with his three children, Garnett, with his three children and Christopher with one child. Gary Stuart Cooke (Carol) and their daughters, Valerie Michelle Nelson (Chuck), two children, Krystina Hobbs Hart and Brett Revell Hart; Melinda Joy Cooke Willis (Spencer), two children, Katie Elizabeth Willis and Benjamin David Willis; and Andrew Stuart Cooke (Erica). Cynthia “Cindy” Ann Sullivan Sauls (Tim) one daughter, Melanie Dawn Hill Everton (Danny) with their daughter, Alexie Ann Everton. Virginia is survived by ten great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by her nephew, Leonard Dal Holland and his wife, Shirley Lane Bullock who held a special place in her heart.
A family night, celebrating the life and light of “Gum Gum” will be held from 6:00 ~ 8:00 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, 2017 at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 10719 Courthouse Road, Fredericksburg. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, Oct. 20, 2017 in Oak Hill Cemetery.
