Vida Ruth Thompson's Obituary
Vida Ruth Thompson, 77, of Fredericksburg, Virginia, died Thursday, September 22, 2022. She was born in Durham, North Carolina on July 21, 1945, to Henry Hurdle Compton and Mary Hunter Pendergraph.
Vida spent her childhood in North Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland. Vida loved life to the fullest. Vida was an avid speed demon in her younger years driving her Pontiac Trans Am with the wind in her hair. Vida’s favorite place on earth was to be sitting on the beach at Cedar Point in Morgantown, Maryland in a lawn chair with her feet in the sand, fishing pole in hand, and a line in the water. Vida enjoyed boat rides to Cobb Island and Colonial Beach and river fishing in the Potomac River.
Vida enjoyed her some rock and roll music and loved AC/DC. Vida loved animals and had many beloved cats over the years. Snowball, George, Smokey, Bob-cat, and Baby Kitty are to name a few but she always took care of the neighborhood cats too. Vida enjoyed reading the bible and attending Baptist church in Oak Grove and Colonial Beach, Virginia. Vida enjoyed watching tv, including soap operas, Wheel of Fortune, Price is Right, and Jeopardy. Vida always wanted to go on Jeopardy and could answer near all of the questions when the show was airing. Vida was very smart and enjoyed doing crosswords and solving other puzzles in the Free Lance Star newspaper.
Vida spent many years working at the Harry W. Nice Memorial Bridge as a toll sergeant before retiring on disability after injuring her back on the job.
Vida helped raise six boys growing up and all their neighborhood friends over the decades. Vida always offered a place for her son’s friends to stay in time of need. Vida loved all her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, family, and friends. Vida loved everyone and her smile would light up and give all happiness around her.
Vida is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Kevin and Shelia Shadle, Kristopher and Jessica Thompson, James Thompson and Lynnette Thompson, and Brent Thompson; stepsons and step daughters-in-law, Todd and Teasha Thompson, and Barry Thompson; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; many other relatives, and life-long friends
