Vernelle Hicks Paul's Obituary
Vernelle Hicks Paul, 95, of Culpeper, entered the comforting arms of her Savior on Monday, May 25, 2026, at her residence, surrounded by her family.
She was born on April 30, 1931, to the late Eugene “Speed” and Myrtle Seay Hicks in Culpeper. Vernelle graduated from Culpeper High School in 1949 as part of the final graduating class to attend the East Street building and fondly recalled performing the leading role in the senior play. She later began her nursing career at the Millman House, now known as The Culpeper, where she proudly became the last surviving member of the original staff. After becoming a mother, Vernelle devoted herself fully to her role as a homemaker, caring lovingly for her family and many others with whom she came in contact over the years. She found great joy in cooking, gardening, sewing, and spending time with those she loved most.
Vernelle is survived by her loving husband of 73 years, Harold Lawrence Paul; daughter, Carol Paul Hobeck (William “Bud”); grandsons, Christopher and Eric Hobeck; brother Richard “Jim” Hicks (Shelby); and a host of additional family and friends.
In addition to her parents, Vernelle is preceded in death by her brothers, James “Sonny” Hicks, Rev. Harold “Bo” Hicks, and Thomas “Tommy” Hicks.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, May 31, 2026, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel of Culpeper, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper, VA.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, June 1, 2026, at 1 p.m. at Fairview Cemetery with Rev. Jojuan White officiating.
