V. Curtis Brooking's Obituary
V. Curtis Brooking passed away at The Culpeper Retirement Community on December 30, 2025 at the age of 89. He was born in Montpelier Station, VA to the late Mildred and Linwood (“Link”) Brooking.
Curtis graduated from Orange County High School and went on to Virginia Tech where he was a member of the Corps of Cadets. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1959 and was assigned to the Signal Corps in Orleans, France, where he met his future wife, Odile (“Dee”). Upon completion of his military service, Curtis and Dee settled in Culpeper, VA as he began a 40-year career at VDOT, retiring as District Materials Engineer.
Curtis was a devoted member of Culpeper Baptist Church for over 60 years, serving in many of its ministries; the Shiloh Association and the Board of Trustees of the Virginia Baptist Homes. He was also an active member of the Culpeper Ruritan Club.
In his spare time, Curtis loved to work alongside his Dad taking care of “Rockwood”, the family home and surrounding property in Orange County where many happy family events were celebrated over the years. He also made sure that his children, and later his grandchildren, became involved in ongoing projects there, learning new skills while having fun.
He is survived by Dee, his wife of 64 years, and their three sons; Richard (Tanya), Mark, and Phillip; granddaughters, Morgan Byrd (Charles) and Brittani Tharp; grandsons, Blake, Mason, and Matthew Brooking; great grandchildren, Hadley, Avery, and Dewey Byrd; and by his sister, Anne Brooking Stelter; and her three sons.
A service of remembrance will be held on Friday, January 9, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. at Culpeper Baptist Church, 318 S.
