Terry Lee Walker's Obituary
Terry Lee Walker, or T-Raw, the tall, gregarious, congenial sports enthusiast, died Thursday, August 24, 2023, at UVA Hospital in Charlottesville, VA, from pancreatic cancer. He was 55.
Terry was born on May 3, 1968, in Columbus, OH, and grew up in Ohio, Hawaii, New Hampshire, and lastly Virginia, following his father’s military postings. He graduated in 1986 from Gar-Field High School in Woodbridge, VA. His career path led him to positions in the procurement field, notably, in the aerospace industry as a buyer for Collins Aerospace and as a senior buyer at Ultra Electronic, Inc.
Terry married Frances Elizabeth Hackley on August 21, 1999. They settled in Chantilly, VA, but relocated to Culpeper, VA in 2009. Terry embraced Culpeper as though he were a native. He happily became a member of the large, extensive Hackley clan and the Culpeper community. As his brother-in-law Mike Hackley said, “Terry was always at every function no matter what it was, always willing to lend a hand and if you were kin to the Hackleys, you were always his cousin. Also if you were a friend of the family, you were his friend!”
He gave back to the community in many roles, starting with coaching T-Ball when his daughter Caitlin was 4. He continued over the years by dedicating much of his time to Culpeper Sports programs. He coached youth basketball, football, softball, and girls flag football, winning several championships. He even coached his family in the Culpeper Women’s Flag Football League, winning a championship with Team Fire. He took great pride in volunteering for Eastern View High School sports. He announced Eastern View High School basketball, field hockey, softball, and JV football games. He always answered the call to be the hype man, especially for Friday night football. You could always find Terry in the booth running the clock and hyping the team and fans with music (particularly Go-Go). Terry was willing to participate in anything that built morale. He even joined Women Inspiring Success and Empowerment and the Black Excellence Network to show solidarity while he worked for Collins Aerospace.
Terry loved to make people laugh. He could be silly and mischievous. A co-worker wrote, “I don’t think I’ve met anyone who lit up the way he did when he talked about his family. He loved to share stories about his kids and family. He always made people laugh.” Terry had a special relationship with all of his nieces and nephews, spending so much time with them that his nephew Andre affectionately called him “Uncle Daddy.”
An avid collector of sports memorabilia, Terry held an extensive collection of football, baseball, basketball, and the Negro Baseball League objects. He also held an extensive toy collection. He was a Pittsburgh Steelers fan and baseball aficionado. One of his fondest memories was taking his father-in-law, Leroy Hackley, a former player in the Virginia Negro Baseball League, to the very first Washington Nationals game.
He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Frances Hackley-Walker; daughter, Caitlin Walker and fiancé Tyler Smith; sons, Brayden and Micah Walker; father, Jerome Walker, and wife, Angie; sister, Tina Walker; uncle, Donald King; aunt, Lorraine Hoover (Philip); sisters-in-law: Cheryl Francis (Wyn); Valerie, Deborah, and Karen Hackley; Patricia Derricotte (Keith); Hackley brothers-in-law: Leroy, Jr. (Barbara), Lorenzo “Maurice” (Rozeeta), Michael, Gregory (Kelley), Lynn Sr. (Heather), Kelly “Brian” (Heather), and Scott (Monica); special friend, Milton Miranda; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
He was predeceased by his mother, Donna I. (King) Walker; and father and mother-in-law-Leroy Mason, Sr. and Dorothy Ann Hackley.
