Susan C. Butler's Obituary
Susan C. Butler, 81, of Culpeper passed Saturday, September 30, 2023 at The Culpeper. She was born April 21, 1942 in Richmond, VA to the late Mary Miller Carter and Ivy Dufner Carter, Jr. Susan attended Thomas Jefferson High School and went on to graduate from the University of Virginia earning her BS in Nursing. She married William T. Butler Jr. “Tim” in 1965, and lived in Richmond until moving to Gloucester, VA in 1979. The Butlers loved Gloucester and Susan managed Gloucester Orthopaedic, until 1995 when Tim and Susan moved to Hampden-Sydney where Tim said it was like throwing Br’er Rabbit in the Briar Patch. After Tim’s untimely death Susan eventually moved to Culpeper, VA where she became active in Culpeper Presbyterian Church and Culpeper Hospital- first as an RN, then as a Pink Lady. Susan morphed into “Gran B” as she was known by many both young and her peers. Her devotion to family was unmatched; she attended countless sporting events cheering on her grandchildren and supporting her community.
Susan’s faith life was paramount from Westhampton Methodist Church in her formative years to Welbourne UMC where she and Tim started their family, then on to her beloved Singleton UMC in Ware Neck, VA. In 1995, to participate in all things Hampden-Sydney, she and Tim joined College Church (Presbyterian) where they became active and formed friendships that continue today. Finally, after settling in Culpeper, Susan joined Culpeper Presbyterian Church. Her “CPC” family sustained her first, by becoming her core group in Culpeper, then offering her care and support during her battle with Parkinson’s.
She is survived by her children, William T. Butler III “Tripp” (Shannon) and Mary Elizabeth Grimes (Alton); four grandchildren, Ivy “Caroline” Butler, William “Tillman” Butler IV, Alton “Will” Grimes, and “Barrett” C. Grimes.
In addition to her parents and husband, Susan is preceded in death her sister Macon Fooshe’ Austin.
