Stephen "Steve" White, Jr.'s Obituary
Stephen Clifford “Steve” White, Jr. (67) passed away on October 21, 2013 at the North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, NC after 80 days in a coma brought on by burn wounds suffered in a tragic accident at his family farm on August 3, 2013. Steve battled through burns over 30% of his body, pneumonia, renal failure and breathing difficulties prior to finally succumbing to cardiac arrest. He was, in death, as tough, committed and caring as he was in life.
Steve was born in Warrenton, Virginia on March 14, 1946 to Stephen Clifford White, Sr. and Lillian Hixson White Dixon. Both his parents and his sister, Marie White Tinsley, preceded him in death. He attended Culpeper County High School where he was dedicated to the 4-H Club and outdoor activities, hobbies that stayed with him throughout his life. He married the love of his life, Barbara Jean Broyles, on Saturday, August 12, 1967. Steve dearly loved his family and friends, his farm, hunting and fishing, photography, technology, Virginia Tech Football, and visiting Charleston, SC. He was funny, caring, giving, handy and knowledgeable.
Steve’s career included managing plant floors and job sites. His greatest fulfillment came as a bridge inspector with the Virginia Department of Transportation (“VDOT”). He was widely recognized for his attention to detail and commitment to quality. Three years ago he took early retirement in order to help raise his grandchildren, whom he taught to fish, including the building of a pond on the family property, and help foster in them the curiosity that served Steve throughout his life.
He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Broyles White, his son, Stephen Craig Broyles White and his wife Kristin Adlam White, and grandchildren Rosalee Gracin and Stephen Cutler, Steve’s daughter, Wendy White Lybrand, her husband, Fred Lybrand and their children Fred Everett and Lillian Isolde. He was a wonderful father, husband and friend. He will be greatly missed.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 24, 2013 from 5 to 8 pm at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, October 25, 2013 at 11 am at Culpeper United Methodist Church, 1233 Oaklawn Drive, Culpeper, VA with Rev. Jessica Colwell and Rev. Wayne Bernardo officiating.
Interment will follow in Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery in Reva.
