Stephen Michael Leake's Obituary
Stephen M. Leake, 71, of Rappahannock County, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 5, 2026, at his home with his family by his side.
Born and raised in Sperryville, Steve was a proud graduate of Rappahannock County High School and spent his life doing the work he loved. He was self-employed for many years as an excavator operator and a farmer. Before owning his own business, he was a truck driver for Martin Brower and worked on the farm at Eldon Farms. A true countryman at heart, Steve loved horses, cows, dogs, and all animals. He especially loved to ride horses and compete in cutting events. Steve enjoyed farming and all things related, especially Massey Ferguson tractors, equipment, and trucks. He always found his greatest peace outdoors, surrounded by the beauty of Rappahannock County and the mountains he called home.
As a young man, he enjoyed playing softball and basketball and was a dedicated Sperryville volunteer firefighter and station chief for years. Growing up, he attended Thornton Gap Baptist Church and later in life, F.T. Baptist church. His faith brought him peace throughout his cancer battle. Steve was known throughout the community for his friendly demeanor, strength, and love for his children and grandchildren, a true Sperryville man who never strayed far from his roots. Later in life, he immensely enjoyed watching his grandsons compete in sports. Steve will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Steve is survived by his children, Jennifer Deal (Daniel), Crystal Smith (Eric), and Roy Taylor “RT” Leake (Kate); seven grandchildren, Alex Deal, Ryan Deal, Andrew Deal, Mason Smith, Jason Deal, Maddox Smith, and Jasper Leake; his sister, Linda Kline; his nephew, Scott Kline; and his niece, Melissa Mellon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Lecie Leake, his infant sibling, Patty Lou Leake, and his brother-in-law, Bob Kline.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, June 11, 2026, at Thornton Gap Baptist Church, 262 Thornton Gap Church Rd, Sperryville. Burial will follow in Sperryville Cemetery.
