Shirley Payne Kelly's Obituary
Shirley Payne Kelly
1935-2016
Shirley was born Shirley Ann Payne in Culpeper on August 22, 1935 to her dear parents Linwood and Irene Payne. She was a graduate of Culpeper High School (1953) and also (as a non-resident student) of Art Instruction of Minneapolis in Commercial Art and Design (1955). She married Michael Kelly on June 7, 1958, a date she selected in hopes Michael would remember their anniversary (6/7/8) which he has.
Shirley loved her family, her late sister Jean Garr and late brother Linwood Payne, Jr. To the end of her life on earth she missed her mother Irene.
Shirley had a life-long interest in Fine Art, completing many works in oil and pastel, exhibiting and selling some, and keeping or giving others as gifts. Despite various health problems, while living with her husband in Manassas she served for a time as President of her Sunday school class, as a volunteer aide at the school for exceptional children and was involved in other community and charity activities. After open-heart surgery in 2001, she did no further painting but did compose poetry, mainly on Christian devotional themes and continued to support and love her husband who retired from civil engineering in 2000.
Shirley and Michael had no children. At her death from Alzheimer’s she is survived by numerous nieces and nephews and by her husband Michael who is grieving over the loss of the finest person he ever knew, not only his wife but his closest friend.
The family will receive friends on Monday, January 18, 2016 from 12 to 2 p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper, VA.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at 2 p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel with Mr. Arthur Carmichael officiating.
