Russell Howerton Inskeep Sr.'s Obituary
Russell Howerton Inskeep, Sr., 88, of Culpeper, Virginia, passed away on Friday,
November 9, 2012 at Royal Haven Nursing Home in Front Royal, Virginia. Russell was born July 21, 1924 to John Louis Inskeep and Lucie Yowell Inskeep.
He attended Virginia Tech as a member of ROTC majoring in Dairy Science and was known for his staunch support of the Hokies throughout his life. He managed the family dairy farm with the help of his three sons until 1971 when the cows were sold and replaced with Holstein steers which were sold for beef. That same year the farm became known as Mt. Pony Farms, Inc. and continues to be operated by his sons.
Russell was known in the agricultural community as an innovative farmer and won a number of awards including ”The Progressive Farmer’s” Master Farm Family Award in 1966, Outstanding Farm Family Award by the Culpeper Chamber of Commerce in 1990, and Lancaster Sunbelt Expo Southeastern Farmer of the Year from Virginia in 1991. The multi-generational farm was recognized as a Bicentennial Farm by the Virginia Farm Bureau Federation in 1974.
Russell was a member of the Culpeper Farmers’ Co-op Board for 25 years as well as Shen Valley Meat Packers and the Virginia State Dairyman’s Association. During his tenure as a dairyman he was also active in the Maryland-Virginia Milk Producers’ Association.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Jean Hudson Inskeep; son Russell (Rusty) Howerton Inskeep, Jr.; son John Boswell Inskeep and wife Phyllis, and their children Joseph Boswell and wife Sarah, as well as daughter Kimberly Inskeep Burke and her husband Michael J. Burke along with great-grandchildren Emmalee, Blake and Laynee Burke. He is also survived by son William (Bill) Brinker Inskeep and wife Carol, and their sons William Paul and wife Mindy, Patrick Louis and Peter Franklin. Additional survivors include brother Harold Johnson Inskeep and a number of nieces and nephews.
Those predeceasing Russell were his parents, brothers John Louis Inskeep who died at age four
and Robert Louis Inskeep, and as well sisters Mary Inskeep Carpenter, Marjorie Inskeep Bailey and Mildred Earle Inskeep Huffman.
The family will receive friends on Monday, November 12, 2012 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel of Culpeper, 850 Sperryville Pike.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at 11:00 AM at Culpeper Presbyterian Church 215 S. Main Street with Rev. Wayne Bernardo officiating.
Inurnment will be Wednesday, November 14, 2012 at 11:00 AM in Fairview Cemetery.
