Roy Lee Beck's Obituary
Roy Lee Beck, 92, of Boston, VA, passed away on June 27, 2021, at Sentara RMH Medical Center in Harrisonburg. Va.
He was born on November 30, 1928, in Arlington, VA, to the late Eula Orean Wood and Charles Edward Beck Sr.
Mr. Beck dedicated more than 50 years to firefighting, beginning with the Alexandria (VA) Volunteer Fire Department at the age of 12. He spent 33 years at the Fort Belvoir (VA) Fire Department, rising to the rank of assistant fire chief, before retiring in 1981. He was also a lifetime member of the Salem (VA) Volunteer Fire Department. Throughout his decades in the fire service, he mentored many younger firefighters, who would gather around to listen to “Chief" tell stories.
Mr. Beck served as an Army radio operator during the Korean War and was an active member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2524, where he served as a post commander.
He enjoyed fishing, playing poker, and watching baseball, football, golf, and Westerns. His greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Dottie, and two sons, Kenneth (Kim) of Ruskin, FL, and David (Amanda) of Boston, VA. He also leaves behind six grandchildren, Gabriel Beck and Keleah Hedges of Albuquerque, NM, Tyler Soden of Orlando, FL, and Matthew, Faith and Erica Beck of Boston, VA, and one great-grandchild, Shaiyler Matthias Beck of Albuquerque. Also surviving are two sisters, Frances Brown and Mary Nicely, one brother, Douglas Beck, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, Roy has been reunited with his sisters, Mildred and Eula, his brothers, Bruce, Charles Jr., Richard, Melvin and Walter, and his grandson, Matthias.
The family will hold a private celebration of life at a later date.
The family has asked that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Alzheimer’s disease charity of your choice.
