Roy Reynolds Atkins, Sr.'s Obituary
Roy Reynolds Atkins, Sr., 94, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 7, 2014 at his home in Sperryville, Virginia surrounded by his family. Mr. Atkins was born on February 16, 1920 in Sperryville on the family farm which is now part of Shenandoah National Park. He was the son of the late Ashby Jackson Atkins and Treva Clater Atkins.
Mr. Atkins was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Mary Jenkins Atkins, who he married on April 14, 1945. He was also preceded in death by six sisters - Beulah, Maggie, Connie, Mary Anna, Lois and Rena, and five brothers - Elmer, Levi, Burnam, Nelson, and Joseph “Hill”.
He is survived by two sons, Roy Atkins, Jr. and Roger Atkins; one daughter, Beverly Atkins; and one grandson, Todd Atkins. Mr. Atkins enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. He enjoyed farming, hunting beekeeping, and was an avid gardener into his 90’s. His ultimate passion was trout fishing and at the age of 80 took his first airplane ride to fish the waters of Montana.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 11th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Home in Culpeper, Virginia.
A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, November 12th at 2:00 p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Home 850 Sperryville Pike in Culpeper, Virginia.
Interment will follow at Washington Masonic Cemetery in Washington, VA.
Pallbearers are Andy Dwyer, Edward “Pete” Jenkins, Ronald Dodson, Rodney Coates, David Timbers, Bobby Foster, James Jenkins, and Darren Dodson. Honorary pallbearers are Thaniel Dodson, Richard Jenkins, Nelson Atkins, Jr., Levi Atkins, Jr., Tommy Brown, Sam Dwyer, Daniel Keyser, and Billy Hix. Special honorary pallbearers are Betty Sisk, Angie Chevalier, Nakesha White, and Mary Ann Frazier.
