Robert Thomas Shultz Jr.'s Obituary
Robert T. Shultz, Jr., of Spotsylvania County, Virginia entered into eternal rest Friday, September 21, 2012 at Medical College of Virginia Hospital in Richmond, Virginia with his family by his side.
He was born September 4, 1940 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and was the son and only child of the late Robert T. Shultz and the late Nell Moore Shultz.
Known as “Tom” or “Bob-Tom” to his family and friends in South Carolina, he grew up in Walterboro, SC. After graduation from Carlisle Military Academy in Bamberg, SC he attended the University of South Carolina. He proudly served six years in the U.S. Army and was stationed in various locations in the U.S., as well as serving tours in Korea and Germany.
In 1965, after his Army service, he returned to South Carolina and was employed in the Electronics Department at the Charleston Naval Shipyard while attending the Baptist College, now Charleston Southern University. He graduated cum laude from the Baptist College in 1972 with dual degrees in Business Administration and History, after which he accepted a position with the Naval Air Systems Command in Washington, D.C. Now know as “Bob” to friends and coworkers, he earned a Master’s Degree in Logistics Management from the University of Southern California branch at the Pentagon. In 2003, he retired from the Naval International Programs Office in Washington, D.C. after over 43 years of federal government service from which he received numerous meritorious service awards.
In 1969, “Tom” was married to the former Dorothy Welch of Holly Hill, SC. They are the parents of two sons. The family lived in the Mt. Vernon area of Alexandria, VA for 32 years before relocating to Spotsylvania, near Fredericksburg, VA in 2008. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Alexandria.
He was a loving son, husband, father and “granddad”, a quiet and gentle man who enjoyed reading and history, especially military history, sharing stories, jokes and laughs. His friends and former coworkers remained an important part of his life, and he especially enjoyed frequent Saturday morning breakfasts with some special friends as long as his health permitted.
Survivors include his beloved stepmother, Ellen Shultz of Hanahan, SC; his wife of the home, his sons, Michael Thomas Shultz and Eric William Shultz, both of Spotsylvania; a granddaughter, Rebecca Lynn Shultz and a grandson, Jozef Thomas Shultz.
A funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, September 29, 2012 at Found and Sons Funeral Chapels-Cremation Service, 10719 Courthouse Road, Fredericksburg. Robert’s family will receive friends one hour prior to the service and following the service. Burial will be held at a later date in Quantico National Cemetery.
