Robert McCabe Ryan's Obituary
Robert “Bobby” McCabe Ryan, 79, of Culpeper, died Wednesday, January 29, 2025, in Charlottesville, VA. He was born February 16, 1945, in Geneva, NY to the late James Hugh Ryan, Jr. and Emily Greene Ryan.
Bobby was an Assistant Scoutmaster and lifeguard with the Boy Scouts. He attended Fork Union Military Academy and became a Lower School Master Sergeant. Bobby was a Veteran of the U.S. Army where he received the Outstanding Soldier of the Quarter Award. He served on the Culpeper Town Council for over 20 years, was a former Vice Mayor, and served on numerous Town Council committees. Bobby was a member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church serving as an usher, vestry member and Sr. Warden.
He was a board member at the Museum of Culpeper History.
Bobby was a past president of the Rotary Club of Culpeper and he was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary International. Additional capacities in which he served the Culpeper community included Chair of Camp Fantastic for 19 years, a past president of the Chamber of Commerce, a Culpeper Renaissance member, Chair of Public Safety and Economic Development, Country Club of Culpeper board member, former Vice President of Services for Abused Families, Full Circle Thrift Shop board member, and former member of the Culpeper Jaycees and sponsor of their annual toy drive.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Phyllis “P.J.” Bradshaw Ryan; three children, Christopher McCabe Ryan, Katherine McCabe Ryan Payne (Brandon), and Emily MacRae Ryan; seven grandchildren, Madison C. Settle, Blake M. Settle, Noah L. Payne, Cooper B. Payne, Brittney R. Ryan, Sydney T. Ryan, and Harrison M. Ryan; one great-granddaughter, Stevie Willow Ryan; one sister, Margaret “Peggy” R. Shotwell; five nephews; Andrew S. Kube, Ryan P. Kube, Roger L. Kube, Robert S. Kube, and J. Hugh Ryan, III; and five godchildren, Sarah N. Weber, Felicia T. Wymore, Andrew S. Kube, Philip L. Thornton, IV, and Christopher S. Holloway.
In addition to his parents, Bobby is preceded in death by one brother, Charles Hugh Ryan; one niece, Courtney Elizabeth Kube; and one nephew, Benjamin Hugh Ryan.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 7, 2025, at Culpeper Masonic Cemetery with Rev. Trent Moore officiating.
A reception will be held immediately following the graveside service at the Country Club of Culpeper, 2100 Country Club Rd., Culpeper.
Honorary pallbearers will be his five nephews, Andrew, Ryan, Roger, Robert, and Hugh; his godsons, Christopher and Philip; and Darius M. Vesuna, Marshall E. Jenkins and Jeffrey B. Jorgensen.
