Robert James Mahon's Obituary
Robert James Mahon (“Bob”) died of natural causes in Fredericksburg, Virginia on Sunday April 24, 2022. Born in Braddock, Pennsylvania on January 28, 1937, he was the oldest of three sons of James Mahon and Mary Margaret Kelly.
Bob has been remembered by many as “larger than life.” A natural and enthusiastic leader, he had an immense love of all things family. He was a beloved husband, caring father of ten children (8 sons and two daughters) and a grandfather to 24 grandchildren.
Bob also had a profound love for the sea and boating. His boat, the ‘Maire’, a 42 ft Grand Banks, participated in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic sailing program as a lead photographer boat. He was also a Division Captain and Commander of the Coast Guard Auxiliary in Los Angeles for many years, traveling the waters off Southern California and the Channel Islands.
A graduate of Central Catholic High School in Pennsylvania where he played football and participated in track and field, Bob met his wife Judith (“Judy”) while performing the role of Mr. Lundie in the play ‘Brigadoon', while she played the role of Maggie Anderson. He later attended Duquesne University where he received his associates degree while also helping his mother run her typewriter business.
Bob and Judy married in 1960. After a few years of successful amateur car racing along the east coast, they moved their growing family to Southern California in 1963, ultimately settling in La Habra.
Bob enjoyed being a business owner and employer for many years, creating Mercury Tire Company in Wilmington, California in the mid 1960’s and acting as a partner of Gold Coast Tire Company in Inglewood. He was a member of the Rotary Club in Wilmington, held offices with the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce, and volunteered time and resources to the Boys & Girls Club of Wilmington.
Bob and Judy retired to Superior, Montana in 2003 after a long successful career in business and raising children, and enjoyed traveling the state while taking in the beautiful landscapes, culture and freedom.
Bob is survived by Judy, his wife of nearly 62 years, and his children Sean (Lyn), Pat, Terrence (Jennifer), Tim (Carol), Kelly (Clinton), Robert (Laura), Brendan (Nicole), Bryan, and Elizabeth (Nils) and grandchildren Jessica, Lauren, Shane, Claire, Griffin, Spencer, Grace, Alyssa, Alan, Aubriana, Emily, Katie, Finley, Marlowe, Logan, Piper, Maura, Tess, Harper, Marina, Aidan, Sienna, Olivia and two great-grandchildren Brooklyn and Serenity Rose.
Bob was predeceased by his son Daniel, daughter-in-law Lorether, granddaughter Meaghan, his brother Kerry and his sister in law Emmie, as well as sisters in law Patricia (Patty) and Sarah (Sally).
Bob’s memorial service will be held on June 24, 2022 at 10:30am at American Martyrs Catholic Church in Manhattan Beach, California, with a reception to immediately follow.
His cremains will be buried at sea off the coast of Southern California
