Robert "Bob" Morrison Crowell's Obituary
Robert “Bob” Morrison Crowell, 91 of Culpeper, Virginia, passed away on May 27, 2018 at his home from pancreatic cancer.
He was born June 4, 1926 in High Point, North Carolina, but grew up in Humphreys County, Tennessee. He was the son of the late Dee Anderson Crowell and Bertha Chapman Crowell Anderson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Rudolph Dee Crowell and his former wife, Dorothy Turner Crowell.
Bob enlisted in the Army on December 23, 1944. He was among the first to land in Tokyo Bay, Japan on V J Day. After serving in the military he would return to the states where he would marry, raise a family, and work with his brother and cousins in the buried telephone cable industry. He, his brother, and a cousin would form Crowell Brothers Construction Company in December of 1961 in Virginia. Crowell Brothers would install buried telephone cable for many of the major telephone companies all over the state of Virginia. Bob continued to run Crowell Brothers until the business was sold in 2005.
Bob then began to enjoy his retirement life. He was an avid sportsman, loving all forms of hunting and fishing. He enjoyed an annual trip to North Bay Canada where he would spend a week fishing. He also enjoyed helping some of his friends from Hurricane Mills, Tennessee put out trotlines. And, he enjoyed eating the game that he killed or caught, often sharing his bounty with others.
In 2004, he would have the opportunity to purchase the old homeplace where he was raised, located in Hurricane Mills, TN. He grew up in this area of Tennessee after his father passed away and his mother remarried Allen Verner Anderson of Hurricane Mills. Bob loved spending time at this old home.
Traveling to this old homeplace gave him much joy and he would go there three or four times a year. He would visit with relatives who still live in the area as well as many of the locals from Humphreys County. A favorite pass time for him to do was to make a pot of coffee, sit out on the front porch, and watch the hummingbirds at the feeder.
Bob belonged to the National Rifle Association and enjoyed an annual trip to the NRA Whittington Center in New Mexico every year. He was also a member of Quail and Upland Wildlife Federation, Duck Unlimited, and many other organizations. He was a member of Culpeper Baptist Church in Culpeper, VA.
He is survived by his longtime life partner, Anna Settle Gore, of Culpeper, VA; daughters, Jerry Lowe (Bob) of Goode, VA, Bobbie C.
