Robert George Apperson
Robert George Apperson, 92, of Culpeper died Friday, February 24, 2012 at Culpeper Regional Hospital. He was born September 28, 1919 in Culpeper to the late Robert S. and Nora B. Apperson.
His life was dedicated and committed to his church and the field of agriculture. He was a lifelong member of Alum Spring Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, trustee, and taught the Sunday school class of adult men over 50 years. He also served as moderator for the Shiloh Baptist Association. He was a graduate of Culpeper High School. It was during his high school days when he became interested in the field of agriculture. During this time he was a 4-H club all star and was awarded the FFA state farmer’s degree. He attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and was a member of the Block and Bridle Club, a member of the student honor court and a member of the Virginia Tech Alumni Association Old Guard. He was a World War II veteran and served in the 8th Air Force 95th Bomb Group stationed in England from January 6, 1942 until October 25, 1945. During this time he was a Sergeant Airplane mechanic. After returning home from military service, he taught an agriculture veteran’s class and worked for the Spillman Farm Management Service for several years. He retired in 1989 after working 33 years with the United States Department of Agriculture as office manager of the Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service. He received the USDA Distinguished Service award and several other awards during his employment. He enjoyed fox hunting and had a keen interest in fox hound field trials. Over a period of years he and his partner, James Compton, owned some outstanding hounds that won championships in both Virginia and Maryland. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of the American Legion, the president of the Northern Virginia Foxhunters Association, president of the district and also the state National Association of ASCS county office employees, president of the Culpeper Ruritan Club and the Ruritan zone Governor, president of the Culpeper Farm Bureau Association and a member of the county Agricultural and Forestal committee.
Mr. Apperson is survived by two sisters, Virginia Waldrop of Montpelier and Edith Brooks of Montpelier, one brother, Joseph W. Apperson and his wife, Hilda of Culpeper, two nieces, Charlotte Waldrop and Joan Brooks, both of Richmond. He is also survived by five nephews, Campbell Waldrop of Montpelier, Joseph W. Apperson, Jr. of Orleans, VA, and George M. Apperson of Culpeper, Cyrus B. Will, Jr. of Fairborn, Ohio and Stephen P. Will of Culpeper.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Coates Apperson.
The family will receive friends on Monday, February 27, 2012 from 5 to 7pm at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper, VA.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at 2pm at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel with Rev. John Miller officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery
