Richard R. Haight's Obituary
Richard Dick Roswell Haight, 84, of Manassas passed away Wednesday, July 9, 2008 at Fairfax Nursing Center.
He was born at home in Washington, D.C. to the late Hannah and Harvey Haight.
Mr. Haight was a lifelong resident of Rockville, MD until July 2006, when he and his wife moved to Manassas, VA to be closer to family.
He was a retired business owner and an attorney. He was the owner of Watkins Appliances in Rockville, MD, upon closing that business in 1981, he began practicing law full time.
He was also involved in local politics, having served two-terms as a councilman for the City of Rockville.
He was a lover of music, all kinds, mostly big band. He played the organ, and he wrote the City of Rockville march, which is still played today.
He was the President and founder of Over Twenty-one, Inc., an organization dedicated to telling the truth about the dangers of alcohol and other drugs. He was extremely passionate about his work with Over Twenty-one, as he lost a son to a drunk driving crash in November of 1981. His biggest desire in life, was to one day see the world free of alcohol and the destruction that it brings.
He was preceded in death by his son, William Roswell Haight.
He is survived by his wife, Jean. August 5, 2008 would have marked their 64th wedding anniversary. He’s also survived by his children, Kathleen Cassin and her husband, Martin of Manassas, VA, Lawrence Haight of Hedgesville, WV, Stephen R. Haight of Rockville, MD and Nancy Welch of Hummelstown, PA; his grandchildren, Suzanne Good and her husband, John, Daren Keller, Michael Haight, Cherilyn Davis and her husband, Chad, Kristie Tanner and her husband, Jeremy, Scott Plouse and David Turner.
He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Gaithersburg, MD and Grace United Methodist Church in Manassas, VA.
The family will receive friends Saturday, July 12, 2008 from 6:00-8:00 pm at Found and Sons Lee Funeral Chapel, 8521 Sudley Road, Manassas. Burial will be private in Rockville Cemetery.
