Richard Joseph Caruso's Obituary
Richard Joseph Caruso, 79, was born in Chicago, IL on March 17, 1946 to the late Frank and Francis Caruso. He was a devoted husband, father, veteran, and friend, who passed away at UVA Charlottesville, on December 21, 2025.
Richard called Chicago home for the first part of his life where he attended catholic school, proudly served in the United States Army in both the 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions during the Vietnam War.
Upon returning home he started with Crane Construction. In 1988 his job sent him to Virginia where he met and fell in love with his wife Donna and Virginia became his home. Richard built a long and dedicated career, retiring from both Hitt Contracting and Balfour Beatty. Outside of work he found happiness on the water, enjoying time on the boat, his cat and traveling the globe and exploring new places with his best friend, his wife.
Richard is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 35 years, Donna Caruso; his daughter, Deanna “Dee Dee” Benjamin and her husband, Dwaine Grimes; and his son, Timothy “Tim” Benjamin and his wife, Vicki; grandchildren, Justin, Chloe, River, Carrlee and Courtney; great-grandchildren, Everly, Olivia and Bryson and sister, Dorothy Billie. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew and loved him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Gino.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 8, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper, VA. Interment to follow at Culpeper National Cemetery, 501 E. Chandler Street, Culpeper, VA with honors provided by VFW Post 2524.
