Rachel, or grandma, as our family called her, became over the years one of my treasured neighbors and friend. Looking at grandma's smile in this picture brings a tear to my eye, an ache in my chest, and a smile to my face.
I remember grandma's daily dedication to keeping their driveway free of sticks, a driveway so steep I was afraid every time I saw her that she would topple over on it! I remember her soft hand grasping mine as she said hello to my grandson and I on their doorstep. And one memory I have that always makes me chuckle is the time that my son Adam left his big chainsaw outside of their house. When he came back later to find it, it was gone-only to later find out that grandma had picked that big tool up and brought it in and out of the rain for him. Knowing how she loved the outdoors, it was not surprising to learn from her daughter, Rachel, that grandma once shot her own deer with a shotgun!
It isn't just grandma's bubbly and warm personality that will be missed, her dedication to the Lord made the world a better place. Her lasting legacy is her daughter and namesake, Rachel, who she raised with Christian values and whose relationship with Jesus is paramount in her life to this day. Rest in peace Rachel and tell my dad I was a good neighbor if you run into him in Heaven. You loved, were loved, and will be much missed.
