Peggy Gonier's Obituary
Margaret Louisa “Peggy” Gonier, 73, of Fredericksburg passed away Wednesday, December 15, 2010 at her home.
Peggy is survived by her loving companion of many years, Bob Hall; her children, Patrice DeBord and her husband, Victor of Stafford County, David Gonier and his wife, Diane of Spotsylvania County, Douglas Gonier of West Virginia, Dennis Gonier and his fiancée, Adelina, of Arlington and Daniel Gonier, and his wife Diane of Georgia; six grandchildren, David Allen Gonier, Renee Staton, Amberlee Gonier, Brett DeBord, Devin Gonier and David Earl Gonier; five great grandchildren; her beloved aunt Gladys and many friends and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, David.
Peggy was born on March 20, 1937 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She graduated from Cambridge High and Latin School in 1955, the same year she married David E. Gonier of the United States Army.
She loved being a military wife, especially traveling and living in many places around the world. Wherever she lived, she became involved as a community activist, as a Girl Scout leader, youth sports supporter, rape crisis counselor, a member of the neighborhood watch and one of the founding members of the local chapter of the National Organization for Women.
Locally, she served as the President of the Spotsylvania Crime Prevention, the Rappahannock Counsel on Aging and the Salem Field Homeowner’s Association. She also volunteered with local veterans groups and was a member of American Legion Auxiliary Post 320.
She was an accomplished author with articles published in many prominent magazines and newspapers, including a regular guest column for the El Paso Times.
Peggy retired from the Drug Enforcement Agency after a career in El Paso, Texas and Washington, D.C. Later, she worked at Spotsylvania Visitor’s Center as a tourist counselor.
She lived her life as she died, with grace, dignity and honor.
Peggy’s family will receive friends Tuesday, December 21, 2010 from 6:00-8:00 pm at Found and Sons Funeral Chapels-Cremation Service, 10719 Courthouse Road, Fredericksburg. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, December 22, 2010 at 11:00 am at the funeral home with the Rev. Perry Forrester officiating. Interment will follow in Quantico National Cemetery.
