Norvelle Wakeman's Obituary
Norvelle S. Wakeman
Norvelle Stiars Granny Wakeman, 85, passed away Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008. She was a wonderful lady whose life and legacy will be celebrated.
Norvelle was born Feb. 5, 1922, in Fredericksburg, to the late Daisy Green and Kempster T. Stiars. She attended local area schools and graduated from James Monroe High School. Her husband of 67 years, Newell D. Pops Wakeman, predeceased her Aug. 4, 2007. The Wakemans owned and operated Over the Hills Antiques and enjoyed many years of collecting and selling antiques, both locally and in the Hagerstown, Md., area. They had a ready supply of two-dollar bills to hand out to everyone they met for good luck.
Mrs. Wakeman is survived by her beloved brother, John Dennis Stiars of Richmond. She was a loving and caring mother to Jean W. Jones and her husband, Daniel, and to Sue W. Bradshaw and her husband, Gordon, all of Fredericksburg. She also leaves behind seven grandchildren, Robert K. Taylor Jr., Lisa Jones Garcia, Shannon Taylor Hagerman, Newell D. Jones, Kristen Taylor Weatherholtz and Damon and Christina Bradshaw; and nine great-grandchildren, Ingrid, Georgia and Flynn Jones, Marcus and Lila Garcia, Landon and Cameron Taylor and Hannah and Jordan Hagerman. Their visits were the joy of her life in later years. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Betsy Mayson Taylor.
Norvelle was a caregiver to many of her elderly relatives and will be remembered for making a great pot of soup. She was a Christian and a lifelong member of Fredericksburg Baptist Church.
Mrs. Wakeman became a resident of Marion Manor Alzheimer’s Care Facility, Stafford, in September of 2007. She leaves an extended family of residents and staff at this wonderful, compassionate home. She was under the care of Marion Manor and Mary Washington Hospice staff, as well as Dr. Weyland Marks, during her last weeks of life. She was allowed to die with great dignity, and at peace. The family of Mrs. Wakeman extends their heartfelt thanks to all who cared for her in the final hours of her life. She was loved.
