Monnie Lenora Green's Obituary
If we're blessed, we all have someone in our lives like Monnie Lenora Shield Green. She died Tuesday, May 19, 2015 at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, Virginia - just shy of her 91st birthday. Monnie was the hub of a big family, an anchor in this world for so many.
Among those who no doubt greeted her in heaven: her husband of 68 years, William S. "Billy" Green; and two of her children, Ezra D. Green and Mary Ann Kimberlin. On the long list of those left behind to miss her: five children: Elaine Shaw, David Green, Barbara Jean Houck, Rose Marie Cohen and Tommy Green; her children's husbands and wives; dozens of grandchildren, great- grandchildren and great great-grandchildren.
We who knew her well - her family and long-time friends - will not remember her by her final years, when old age robs us of our vitality.
The woman we will remember was full of strength, faith, fun, optimism and generosity - someone who gave much more than she ever received.
Monnie and Billy spent their early days in King George - a humble and hard-working couple. They didn't have much but they got by. Her favorite present from him was a grubbing hoe that made it easier for her to plant a vegetable garden. Prayer - plus a good splash of Clorox - could heal anything.
Fifty years ago, Monnie and Billy moved their family to Stafford, where their little white house had an almost magical ability to hold all comers, there was always room at their table. Always a bed for staying over. Always a welcoming smile at the door.
Monnie made us all feel treasured - every tiny leaf on her tree. She told us we were wonderful, smart and capable. She hinted that we came from royalty. We had our doubts, but now we know it's true. No bloodline could be more precious than one like Monnie Green's.
Monnie’s family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Friday, May 29, 2015 at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 10719 Courthouse Road, Fredericksburg, VA 22407. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 30, 2015 at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in Laurel Hill Cemetery in Spotsylvania, Virginia.
