Monica Lantigua's Obituary
Monica Lantigua, 64, of Spotsylvania County, born in Menorca, Spain, died peacefully of lung cancer, Wednesday, March 18, 2015 at Mary Washington Hospital Hospice.
Her loving husband, Bert De Vore and her loving daughter, Vanessa Grande were at her side. Her nurses, who she called her angels, all came in to pay their respects. They said what they admired most was her sense of humor and her sincerity.
Monica was a highly intelligent woman with many abilities and insights. She designed and sewed beautiful items for the home. In the garden, she mixed cement for the patio floor and planted all types of flower arrangements. In Puerto Rico and Virginia, she painted beautiful tiles.
After leaving Spain, her family left for Cuba, where her parents built a profitable business. This was lost after Fidel Castro rose to power. She witnessed and lived the horrors under the regime.
Her father worked at the Guantanamo Base for the US Navy. Trying to arrange the escape of his wife and daughter, he was able to have a section of the cyclone fence removed. The wife froze with fear at the last minute and Monica, although already inside the base returned to the mother. The father fled to Spain, as his life was threatened. His wife and Monica followed after three years, almost losing their passage.
Monica moved to Puerto Rico, raised a family but lost her husband to lung cancer. To make ends meet she worked for Bert.
After Bert lost his wife, they fell in love and married. It was decided after much discussions to settle in Fredericksburg where they lived a wonderful life together.
Monica is survived by her husband, Bert De Vore; her daughter, Vanessa Grande; her son, Edoardo Grande; her son-in-law, Albert Rodriguez; her cherished grandsons, Tonathiuh and Sebastian; and her sister, Elizabeth.
A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, March 22, 2015 at Faith Baptist Church, 4105 Plank Road, Fredericksburg.
